
Luis Bautista Named MWL Player of the Week

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Midwest League announced Monday that the Chiefs' Luis Bautista has been named the MWL Offensive Player of the Week. From June 30 through July 6, Bautista hit .524 with three home runs, eight RBI, four doubles, six runs scored and had a slugging percentage of 1.143 to add to the Chiefs 6-1 record over those days. Bautista began the week going 2-for-4 against Kane County with a RBI double and a run scored against the Cougars. He then traveled to Wisconsin to take on the Timber Rattlers and had another 2-for-4 game and a RBI double in the first game of the three-game set. In the next two games, Bautista drove in six of the team's 14 runs as the Chiefs extended their single-season record win streak to 11 games. The Chiefs moved on to Quad Cities following the Wisconsin series, where Bautista is 1-for-6 on the series with a double. On the season he is hitting .349 with eight home runs, 28 RBI, 16 doubles, one triple, 23 runs scored, and a .637 slugging percentage.
Marquez Smith also received the title of Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week from May 26 through June 1 of this year. Smith was the first player to be named Offensive Player of the Week since 2005, when Eric Patterson won the award twice, April 7-17 and July 18-24. On the pitching side, current Chiefs right-hander Robert Hernandez was named MWL Pitcher of the Week last season for the week of June 4-11.
