Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that outfielder DJ Hollingsworth has joined the Oakland farm system and will make his A's organizational debut as a Cougar. Hollingsworth, a 14th round selection by the Yankees in 2006, was recently released by New York before signing as a free agent with Oakland earlier today. Also, pitchers Scott Mitchinson and Tyson Ross have been placed on the disabled list. Mitchinson goes on the DL with a right elbow injury, retroactive to June 24, while a right shoulder ailment has sidelined Ross, retroactive to June 29.
Hollingsworth, a 23-year old from Tracy, CA arrives in Kane County after spending time with the Staten Island Yankees, New York's Short-A affiliate. Playing in five games for Staten Island this month, Hollingsworth batted .333 in nine at-bats.
Mitchinson moves to the disabled list after starting in 12 games this season for the Cougars. The native of Australia is currently 5-3 with a 1.90 ERA and was named to the Midwest League All-Star team last month. Ross, a 2nd round pick from last month's draft, joined the Cougars on June 23 as the first '08 draft selection to arrive at Kane County. Ross made two appearances on the recent road trip, one a start and another in a relief role. In five innings of work, Ross struck out five and allowed one earned run.
Kane County (4-8) opens a four-game holiday homestand this evening against the Burlington Bees at 6:30 p.m. Brad Hertzler (1-2, 3.83) will oppose Danny Gutierrez (1-1, 2.53).
