New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs' struggles with the Iowa Cubs continued on Monday night, a 2-1 defeat that was the team's seventh in a row to Iowa. The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning, when an error appeared to open the door for the end of the Zephyrs' six-game losing skid.
After a two-out single by Abraham Nunez, Nelson Figueroa hit a grounder that went through the legs of Cubs shortstop Andres Blanco. Ramon Martinez capitalized on the error, lacing a single into left field to give the Z's a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Figueroa was keeping the Cubs quiet at the plate, yielding just three hits over six scoreless innings. That ended with Micah Hoffpauir's leadoff home run in the seventh, his 23rd of the season and his fourth during the Cubs' seven-game winning streak against New Orleans.
Iowa grabbed the lead in the eighth, when with two outs, Felix Pie and Bobby Scales hit consecutive doubles to knock Figueroa out of the game.
The Zephyrs threatened to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out. Iowa turned to Michael Wuertz, who got Valentino Pascucci to pop out to second, and Jesus Feliciano to fly out to left, ending the inning. Wuertz pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
Figueroa (4-6) took the loss, giving up two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Ryan Church started in right field and played five innings in a rehab assignment, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Trot Nixon played six innings as the Zephyrs left fielder in his rehab debut, going 0-for-3 on two flyouts and a strikeout.
The final game of the series is Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., when LHP Jon Niese faces RHP Mitch Atkins.
