Portland Beavers News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Matt Torra threw seven shut out innings and Josh Whitecell homered and drove in three runs to lead the Tucson Sidewinders to a 4-0 victory over the Portland Beavers on Monday at Tucson Electric Park.

Whitesell logged two hits and drove in three of Tucson's runs on the night, including two on his 24th home run of the season. Trent Oetjen was 4-for-4 and scored two runs to lead the Sidewinders to its second straight win over Portland.

Torra (4-4) held the Beavers to just five hits and recorded six strike outs through seven scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Sidewinders (56-71).

Brett Dowdy, who was 3-for-4, and Paul McAnulty teamed up for five of Portland's seven hits. The Beavers (66-62) have dropped three of their last four games.

Wade LeBlanc (10-8) took the loss for Portland despite recording six strike outs. He gave up four runs (3 earned) on eight hits over five innings in his first loss since July 8.

Tucson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Whitesell's blast to right field and never looked back. The Sidewinders then took advantage of a miscue by the Beavers in the second inning and manufactured an unearned run to extend their lead by three. In the fifth inning, Whitesell plated Oeltjen from first with a two-out double to give Tucson a 4-0 advantage.

The two sides wrap up their four-game series on Tuesday in the final game between the two clubs. The Tucson franchise is set to relocate to Reno for the 2009 season.

Notes: Earlier today, the Beavers added right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith to the active roster and transferred right-handed pitcher Manny Ayala to Class AA San Antonio ... Portland committed a pair of errors for the second consecutive night ... Pitcher Shawn Estes will make a major league rehab start for Portland on Tuesday.
