Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders held Portland scoreless in their 4-0 win on Monday night. Matt Torra, Connor Robertson, and Reid Mahon combined for Tucson's third shutout of the season. Josh Whitesell brought in three of Tucson's four runs with a homerun and a double to provide run support in the victory.
Arizona Diamondback Justin Upton played in his fifth game for the Sidewinders while under Major League rehab, going 1-for-4 with a ground ball single past the shortstop and three strikeouts.
Torra had a quality start for Tucson throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out six and walking one batter.
Whitesell hit his team leading 24th home run in the first inning that brought in Trent Oeltjen to give the Sidewinders an early 2-0 lead. Tucson extended their lead in the second inning when Donnie Kelly hit a grounder to short, which allowed Jesus Merchan to score from third on a fielder's choice.
Whitesell brought in one more run in the fifth inning from a double to left scoring Oeltjen again to give the Sidewinders a 4-0 lead. Whitesell's three RBI in the game gives him 101 on the season, which makes him third player in Tucson franchise history for reach triple digits in RBI in a season. Whitesell is behind only Pat Putnam with 102 and Lyle Overbay with 109 RBI in one season.
The Sidewinders will face Portland in the last game of their four game series starting at 7:00 PM on Tuesday night. LHP Evan MacLane (7-6, 4.66) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander Shawn Estes (4-2, 3.67) will start for the Beavers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
