BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - John McCarthy scored two goals and added an assist as the Worcester Sharks defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-1 on Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena.
After the two teams had a feeling out process in the opening 10 minutes, the Sound Tigers earned the best chances of the first period. First it was Sebastian Collberg and John Persson who were stopped by Grosenick in tight on the power play. Then with three minutes left in the frame, Johan Sundstrom hit the post on a 2-on-1 to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Sharks opened the scoring six minutes into the second period. Rylan Schwartz flipped the puck behind the Sound Tigers net, where Eriah Hayes corralled it. Hayes faked to his right, then wrapped the puck around on the left side, fooling Bridgeport netminder Kevin Poulin to make it 1-0.
Just a minute later, Worcester scored yet again. This time, Poulin could not control a Taylor Fedun shot from the point leading to the goal. Former Sound Tiger Michael Haley grabbed the puck and swung it to the slot, where McCarthy was waiting to tap in for the goal. McCarthy's ninth of the season gave the Sharks the two-goal lead.
Bridgeport came just inches from scoring early on in the third period. Mike Halmo shot the puck on a 3-on-2 that Grosenick had trouble holding onto. Adam Pelech drove the net and got the puck on goal, but the Sharks goaltender made the stop. The referee went to the replay, but the video confirmed the call as the score remained 2-0.
Worcester increased their lead to three on the power play. McCarthy became the distributor this time, feeding Daniil Tarasov near the hashmarks and Tarasov buried it, making the score 3-0. Tarasov's 12th of the season essentially sealed it for the Sharks.
Worcester got another power play tally late in the third period. Dylan DeMelo wristed a shot towards the Sound Tigers net which Poulin never saw and found the back of the cage to make it 4-0.
Bridgeport got on the board with a power play goal of their own with five minutes left in the game. Grosenick initially stopped Aaron Ness' point shot, but Zolnierczyk poked home the rebound to get the Sound Tigers on the board. That was all the scoring Bridgeport would get, as McCarthy added another goal to finish the scoring.
Special teams did the Sound Tigers in yet again, as Worcester's power play went 2-for-3, while Bridgeport's power play went 1-for-4.
The Sound Tigers will continue their home stand on Saturday, March 14 when they host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
Notes: Mike Halmo returned to the Bridgeport line-up after missing 33 games with an injury...The Sound Tigers broke a 2-for-45 slump on the power play with Zolnierczyk's goal...The final meeting of the season between these teams will be on Monday, April 6.
