Penguins Score Late to Pull Past Bears

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Tom Kostopoulos sneaked a shot to the back of the net with 3:23 left in regulation for the go-ahead goal that helped lift the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 5-3 win over the Hershey Bears on Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

With the score tied at two after forty minutes of hockey, the Bears did not wait long to attack in the final period. Mike Moore collected a backdoor pass from Stanislav Galiev and tucked a forehand shot past Penguins goalie Matt Murray to put Hershey up, 3-2, with 3:18 gone in the third.

Only 13 seconds later, the Penguins got the equalizing goal as Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond took the ensuing faceoff and fired a shot that was stopped by Bears goaltender Philipp Grubauer, but Matia Marcantuoni put back the rebound chance for his fourth goal of the season.

The game would remain knotted at three until the final four minutes of the third as dominant shift by the Penguins' top line produced the game-winner. Set up on the right corner of the Hershey crease, Kostopoulos was able to tip a Conor Sheary pass through the pads of Grubauer to put the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ahead for good.

After a too many men on the ice call on the Bears, Sheary scored a power play goal with just 38 seconds remaining to help the Penguins clinch the win.

It took some time in the first period to determine that Penguins had scored the game's first goal. After a centering pass from Scott Wilson, Jayson Megna had his initial shot denied by Philipp Grubauer, but was able to put the rebound to the top of the net. Initially, the goal was waved off and play carried on until the next stoppage, where the video replay confirmed the tally counted and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went ahead 5:44 into the match.

Six minutes later, an innocent wrist shot from the left wall tied the game when Connor Carrick came streaking through the slot to tip the puck past Murray.

Hershey took its first lead of the match at 12:06 of the second during a 2-on-1 rush. Dustin Gazley's pass to Kris Newbury ricocheted off a sliding Penguins defenseman and across the goal line. The Penguins responded at 16:28 of the same period when Barry Goers crashed the crease to tip in his first goal of the season.

Limited tickets remain as the Penguins host the Hershey Bears on Saturday, March 14 at 7:05 p.m.

Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
