Zoinks! Lynx beat Stingrays on Scooby Doo Night

December 30, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Despite facing seven shorthanded situations against the South Carolina Stingrays on Thursday night, the Augusta Lynx held on for a 3-1 at home in front of 3,018 fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

Opening the scoring in the first period, the Lynx took advantage of a South Carolina man advantage to score a shorthanded marker at the 9:13 mark. Phil Cole, who had just arrived in Augusta an hour before faceoff from the Albany River Rats, scored off a feed from Louis Goulet to give the Lynx the lead. John Cronin also picked up an assist on the goal, which came just 12 seconds into the Stingrays' power play.

Joe Tenute replied for the Stingrays at 4:25 of the second period from Ed Courtenay and Matt Reid to tie the game at 1-1, but the Lynx would re-take the lead late in the stanza on a Todd Bennett goal from Goulet and Cole. Bennett crashed the front of the Stingrays net and picked up the rebound from Cole's point shot for the eventual game winner, his sixth marker of the year.

In the third period, the Lynx faced four of their seven shorthanded kills and still managed to keep the Stingrays off the scoreboard, thanks in large part to Jason Saal. The Lynx netminder made 22 saves in the third period alone, and a total of 39 in the game for the win. With time running down and the South Carolina net empty, Goulet was able to avenge an earlier empty net miss against the Stingrays with a goal at 19:46 to cement the win from Bennett and Matt Dzieduszycki.

With the win, Augusta improves to 9-15-3 on the year, collecting five of a possible six points in their last three games. The Lynx will take on the Pride tomorrow night in Pee Dee at 6:05 pm in a special New Year's Eve start time. Augusta returns home to face the Gwinnett Gladiators on New Year's Day at 7:35 pm. Tickets are still available for the contest for $10, $13, and $14 through the Lynx office, all TicketMaster locations, and online at www.TicketMaster.com.
