St. Paul Saints News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS - Runs were scored in just two half innings on Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Fortunately for the St. Paul Saints in their half inning they put up seven. Starter Ryan Zimmerman did everything else, backed by a strong showing from the bullpen as the Saints won 7-1 over the Kansas City T-Bones. The win improves the Saints to 33-18.
Zimmerman retired the first two men he faced and then allowed the lone run he would give up all night. Shawn O'Malley, who has not been retired in the first two games in the series, doubled to right. Chris Colabello knocked him home with a single to right giving the T-Bones a 1-0 lead. That would be the lone run given up by Saints pitchers on Wednesday night.
The Saints offense looked helpless against former Major Leaguer Henry Owens in the first two innings, but in the third they broke out in a big way. Chesny Young led off with a walk and John Silviano drilled a two-run blast to right, his second in as many nights and third of the season, giving the Saints a 2-1 lead. Steve Pascual walked and Max Murphy extended his hitting streak to 12-games with a single to center. Dan Motl was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brady Shoemaker extended his hitting streak to 11 and has reached base safely in 30 consecutive games, with an RBI single to left making it 3-1. A bases loaded walk to Jeremy Martinez gave the Saints a 4-1 lead. With one out, Devon Reodriguez' RBI fielder's choice extended the lead to 5-1. Young chased Owens with a two-run double to right finishing the scoring on the night. Owens went 2.2 innings allowing seven runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three.
Zimmerman took over from there and got out of each jam he got into which began with the third. With two outs O'Malley walked and Colabello singled him to third, but Zimmerman struck out Casey Gillaspie to end the inning.
In the fifth the T-Bones loaded the bases with nobody out when Danny Mars doubled, Dylan Tice walked and O'Malley singled to right. Zimmerman settled down by fanning Colabello and Gillaspie and getting Christian Correa to ground out to end the inning. Zimmerman went 6.0 innings allowing one run on eight hits while walking two and striking out eight.
The bullpen did the rest as Jordan Jess tossed 1.0 shutout inning allowing a hit and striking out one.
Mike Devine pitched his first multi-inning appearance since coming off the inactive list. He looked like the Mike Devine before his injury going 2.0 perfect innings and striking out four. In all, the Saints struck out a season high 13 T-Bones hitters. The two teams struck out a combined 26 times.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Thursday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Tom Curtin (0-0, 4.38) to the mound against T-Bones RHP Dylan Baker (1-2, 4.96). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
