Zephyrs Win in True "Walk-Off" Fashion
April 29, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
A ninth-inning, bases-loaded walk to Jeffrey Hammonds gave the New Orleans Zephyrs (9-11) a 4-3 win over the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes (11-10) Thursday night at Zephyr Field. The decisive walk was one of four free passes allowed by Isotopes relievers Bryan Corey (1-1) and JB Miadich in the ninth.
The âTopes led 3-2 after seven innings, thanks to a two-run home run by Mike Colangelo and an RBI single by Larry Barnes in the fourth inning. But the Zephyrs tied the game on a solo home run by Matt Cepicky in the eighth and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Miadich, who entered the game after Corey walked relief pitcher Travis Hughes with one out in the inning, walked Harris, struck out Tyrell Godwin, and walked Endy Chavez to set the stage for Hammonds. Hammonds drove in the winning run on a 3-2 count. Hughes (1-0) picked up the win for New Orleans. The loss overshadowed a strong outing by âTopes starter Les Walrond, who allowed two runs â none earned â in six innings. The left-hander was victimized by throwing error by Joe Dillon that allowed the Zephyrs to plate a pair of runs in the fourth.
Albuquerque out-hit New Orleans, 9-6, but committed three errors on the night. Matt Padgett recorded three singles raise his batting average to a robust .425. The âTopes will continue their four-game series at New Orleans Friday night at 6:05. The âTopes will return to Isotopes Park on May 6 to begin its longest homestand of the season â a 12-game stay against New Orleans, Portland, and Tacoma. Tickets for that homestand and for all âTopes home games are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
