Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The visiting Omaha Royals scored five runs in the top of the first inning and didn't look back in posting a 10-3 victory over Nashville on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, snapping the Sounds' three-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, Nashville (12-9) retains a one-game lead over the Royals in the American Conference Northern Division.
Omaha leftfielder Aaron Guiel paced the Royals offense, missing the cycle by a double during a 3-for-5 effort that included three RBIs and three runs scored.
Kevin Orie went hitless for the Sounds for the first time this season, finishing 0-for-4 to snap his hitting streak at 14 games.
The visitors jumped out to a comfortable lead in the top of the first with a two-out rally against Nashville starter Jose Capellan. With the bases full, first baseman Chad Santos delivered a two-run single up the middle. Rightfielder Jaime Jones followed with his first home run of the season, a three-run blast to right, to make it a 5-0 contest.
Nashville got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of unearned runs following an error by Omaha shortstop Alejandro Prieto. Corey Hart plated Kevin Orie with a sacrifice fly for the Sounds' first run of the game before Pat Borders, who earlier extended his season-best hitting streak to six games, plated Brad Nelson with an RBI single. Nelson had reached after stroking his team-best eighth double of the year.
Omaha quickly recovered the runs, putting up a pair in the top of the fifth to extend the advantage to 7-2. Prieto led off with a single then scored on Aaron Guiel's RBI triple off the wall in right. One batter later, Mark Teahen brought in Guiel with an RBI single to center.
The Royals tacked on three more in the top of the sixth against Nashville reliever Mike Meyers, highlighted by a two-run Guiel homer, the leftfielder's third dinger of the year.
Borders, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, plated the final run of the contest in the bottom of the ninth, bringing home Corey Hart on a sacrifice fly.
Omaha reliever D.J. Carrasco (3-1) picked up the victory by allowing two unearned runs over three frames after starter Jimmy Gobble tossed three scoreless frames and was removed due to a pitch count. Capellan (1-1) took his first loss of the season after surrendering seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Friday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (0-2, 6.53) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Iowa right-hander Ryan Jensen (0-2, 4.94).
All Country Music Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, & Kids Marathon participants will receive complimentary admission to the game when they show their bib number at the Greer Stadium ticket office. The Sounds will host a special $10 pre-game pasta buffet for the runners and recognize Marathon VIPs prior to the game. Runners can purchase their $10 ticket for the all-you-can-eat pasta buffet at the Sounds booth at the Nashville convention center registration area or at the Greer Stadium box office.
