Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders will host an estimated 12,000 kindergarten through eighth grade students from schools throughout Southern Arizona for the team's 3rd annual D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T. Days spanning Tuesday, May 3rd and Wednesday, May 4th.
As part of the D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T. Day festivities, students will interact with teachers, the Tucson Police Department and Pima County Sheriffs who will have displays around the ballpark, all while enjoying a professional baseball game at the same time. The Sidewinders will provide a game ticket and lunches to all students and teachers in attendance.
"We've worked hard as an organization to ensure D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T. Day is a meaningful and education experience to each child in attendance and we are proud that the event has become bigger and better every season," said Sidewinders General Manager Rick Parr. "The Sidewinders are pleased to be working together with the D.A.R.E and G.R.E.A.T. organizations to impact the Southern Arizona community."
D.A.R.E., which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and G.R.E.A.T., short for Gang Resistance Education and Training, are two nationwide programs taught in schools and sponsored by local law enforcement agencies. D.A.R.E. teaches kids how to recognize and resist the pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco and drugs. G.R.E.A.T. advocates non-violence by teaching kids how to develop positive attitudes toward police officers, avoid conflicts and peer pressure, be responsible, and set positive goals.
"It is opportunities like this that our organization seeks, introducing two very important programs to our children and treating them to a ball game," said Sidewinders owner Jay S. Zucker. "These games are always the most exciting of the season, the kids enthusiasm motivates the players. My wife Melinda and I personally enjoy working with the staff serving lunch to 12,000 children."
The early 10:00 a.m. start times were designed to accommodate as many schools' schedules as possible. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m.
