ZEBULON, N.C. (JUNE 25, 2015) -- The Chicago Cubs have promoted Myrtle Beach Pelicans right-handed pitcher Zach Cates to Double-A on Thursday. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher James Farris has been promoted to the Pelicans from Class-A South Bend.

Cates, 25, will make his second trip to Double-A this season after making seven bullpen appearances with the Smokies from April 11 to May 4. The Conway, Arkansas, native pitched to a record of 0-4 with a 6.14 ERA, striking out seven while walking nine in 7 1/3 innings pitched. Cates also appeared in 23 games for the Smokies in 2014, when he held a 2-1 record and a 6.00 ERA in 27 innings pitched. With the Pelicans, the right-hander fired 18 innings, picking up 20 strikeouts and walking 11 across 18 innings of work. In his time in the Carolina League, Cates collected a pair of saves in four save opportunities, along with a 2-1 record and a 1.50 ERA in 12 appearances. He also picked up his first win in his first appearance with the Pelicans on May 6 after working two shut-out innings against the Salem Red Sox. Originally a third round selection by the San Diego Padres, Cates was acquired by the Cubs along with infielder Anthony Rizzo for pitcher Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na on January 6, 2012.

Farris, 23, is in his second season of professional baseball. The Cubs selected the right-hander in the ninth round of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Arizona. He has also picked up nine saves in 11 save opportunities while racking up 39 strikeouts and walking nine batters in 29 innings of work. Farris was the starting pitcher for the University of Arizona in the final game of the 2012 NCAA Div. I College World Series Championship, where the Wildcats' defeated the University of South Carolina.

With the roster moves, the Pelicans roster remains at 25 active players, which is the Carolina League limit, and includes four players on the disabled list.

The Pelicans begin their first road trip of the second half with a visit to face the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday, June 25, at Five County Stadium. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
