Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 25, 2015) - Jordan Guerrero worked into the ninth inning of Winston-Salem's 5-4 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats in the second-half opener at Calvin Falwell Field.
In the opening frame, Guerrero (1-1) surrendered a leadoff single, immediately followed by a double and two-run base hit that cut Winston-Salem's 4-0 lead in half. From that point until the ninth, the southpaw only allowed two Hillcats (0-1, 33-38) to reach, on a hit by pitch and dropped third strike.
However, with the Dash up 5-2 in that ninth frame, Guerrero ran into trouble, yielding a one-out double to Yhoxian Medina before walking Clint Frazier to end his night after 8.1 innings. Guerrero would end up being charged with four runs on four hits to go with his seven strikeouts and one free pass.
Peter Tago came into the game and fanned Paul Hendrix for the second out before an infield single loaded the bases. LeVon Washington then cued a two-run single down the third base line to pull the Hillcats within one. But Tago came back and fanned Eric Haase to earn his fourth save.
Guerrero fell two outs shy of the first nine-inning complete game by a Winston-Salem hurler since July 20, 2014, when Tony Bucciferro accomplished the feat at Frederick. Only six hurlers have worked nine frames in one game in the Dash era (2009-present).
Winston-Salem (1-0, 31-40) seized the lead in the first inning and never relinquished it. Jake Peter singled with one out in the first, advanced to third on Trey Michalczewski's double and scored on a throwing error.
A base hit by Keon Barnum scored Michalczewski, with the Dash first baseman moving to second on an error. Omar Narvaez's single pushed Barnum to third before Lynchburg starter Luis Lugo (4-6) uncorked a wild pitch to plate Barnum. Two batters later, Toby Thomas singled in a run to put Winston-Salem up 4-0.
After Lynchburg's two runs in the bottom of the first, the Dash responded again in the second. Adam Engel singled to jumpstart the frame. A walk and then fielder's choice pushed him to third, where he scored on another wild pitch by Lugo.
Lugo ended up settling in from there, surrendering just one more hit through his six innings. He was charged with five runs on seven hits while fanning seven and walking one to take the loss.
The Dash will send Robinson Leyer (2-6, 5.26 ERA) to the mound Friday against Lynchburg's Mitch Brown (2-7, 5.85 ERA). Pregame coverage is available at 6:15 p.m., with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
Following their three-game series in Lynchburg, the Dash come home for three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The series begins on June 28 with a Family Sunday, meaning hot dogs and sodas are just $1 through the end of the second inning of Sunday's contest. Plus, a few Dash players will be available before the game for autographs. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
