Yet Another '09 TinCap Gets Call up to Big Leagues
April 25, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - The 2009 TinCaps season was one to remember. From the opening of Parkview Field to winning Fort Wayne's first Midwest League championship, there was no shortage of excitement. There was also no shortage of talent on the field.
The growing list of '09 TinCaps who have reached Major League Baseball climbed to 14 on Wednesday when Daniel Robertson put on a Texas Rangers uniform for the first time. Perhaps no other '09 TinCap has a better story to tell of how he got the call than Robertson.
The 28-year-old outfielder began Wednesday on the roster of the El Paso Chihuahuas, San Diego's Triple-A affiliate. While with the Chihuahuas on the road in Las Vegas, Robertson told MLB.com that he received a call from Padres Vice President of Player Development Randy Smith, who said he had both good news and bad news.
"I said, 'OK, hit me with whichever one you want first,'" Robertson said, according to T.R. Sullivan's story. "He said, 'The bad news is we traded you to the Rangers.' I thought that wasn't so bad, I like Round Rock (the Rangers' Triple-A team). Then he said, 'The good news is you're going right to the big leagues.'"
Robertson was selected by the Padres in the 33rd round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State. The following year he played in 121 for the TinCaps, hitting .296 with 5 home runs and a team-leading 65 runs batted in. After progressing to Advanced-A Lake Elsinore in 2010 and Double-A San Antonio in 2011, Roberton had been in Triple-A since 2012.
