Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CLINTON, IOWA - The Kernels held the Clinton LumberKings to two hits in a 6-1 win on Friday night, snapping a three-game losing streak. Kohl Stewart (1-1) picked up his first Midwest League-win as the right-hander went six innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit. Offensively, Mitch Garver led the way with three hits and three runs batted in.
Stewart allowed his only hit in the second inning - a leadoff single to Tyler O'Neill. He set a season-high with six strikeouts and six innings-pitched. He walked one and hit second baseman Zach Shank twice. He retired the final six batters he faced on the evening.
The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Mitch Garver popped a RBI single into right field to score Tanner Vavra.
Clinton scored their only run in the fourth inning with an unearned run. With two outs, O'Neill drew a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Joe DeCarlo then hit a grounder underneath the glove of Kernels third baseman Bryan Haar, allowing O'Neill to score from second base.
The Kernels quickly took the lead back by scoring a run in the fifth inning, making the score 2-1. Engelb Vielma singled, Jason Kanzler was hit by a pitch, and Tanner Vavra walked to load the bases. Vielma scored when a Chad Christensen RBI fielder's choice forced out Kanzler at third base.
Cedar Rapids scored a pair in the seventh inning, extending their lead to 4-1. Vielma and Kanzler started the inning with consecutive singles. With two outs, Garver drilled a RBI single into right-center to bring in Vielma. Kanzler scored when the Kernels successfully executed a double steal, allowing Kanzler to cross home.
The Kernels added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning, increasing the lead to 6-1. Kanzler tripled to deep center and quickly scored on Vavra's RBI single. Vavra then scored from first base on a RBI double down the left field line by Garver.
Garver led the offense by going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Vielma also added three hits. Kanzler and Vavra collected two hits each.
Yorman Landa pitched two scoreless and hitless innings. He struck out five, including the first four batters he faced. Brandon Peterson finished the game, going one inning. Clinton's Austin Wilson picked up their second hit of the night - a single to left field. Wilson was thrown out at second base as he tried for a double to end the game.
