Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich. - The Dayton Dragons scored seven runs in the third inning on the way to a 10-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Friday night. The victory lifted the Dragons (13-7) ahead of the Loons (13-8) into first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
Phillip Ervin and Carlton Daal led a 15-hit Dragons attack. Ervin had two hits and four runs batted in while Daal collected three hits in the game. Four other Dragons (Beau Amaral, Sebastian Elizalde, Sean Buckley, and Sammy Diaz) all had two hits. The 15 hits for the Dragons were only one fewer than they collected in the entire four-game series at South Bend that ended Thursday night.
The third inning started when Sammy Diaz lined a double over the head of the right fielder. Beau Amaral and Jamodrick McGruder both walked to load the bases with no one out. Phillip Ervin lined a single to left field to bring in both Diaz and Amaral. One batter later, Sean Buckley singled through the middle to drive in McGruder and Ervin and make it 4-0. After Jeff Gelalich walked, Joe Hudson doubled past the center fielder to drive in two more runs. After Carlton Daal's single, Diaz picked up his second hit of the inning, a single to right to bring in Hudson and give the Dragons a 7-0 lead.
Ervin added a two-run double in the seventh and Buckley delivered a run-scoring single in the same inning to build the lead to 10-0. The Loons scored their runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (3-0) earned the win. He worked the first five innings, allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Travieso lowered his earned run average to 1.23.
The Dragons (12-7) battle the Loons (13-7) in Midland again on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. (EDT). Daniel Wright (0-0, 1.69) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Jonathan Martinez (3-1, 2.63). The next home game is Monday, April 28 vs. the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
