Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill- There's something about having Daury Torrez on the mound that gets the Cougars' offense going. In his past two starts, Torrez has been backed by a combined 20 runs from his teammates. The Cougars (15-6) used a seven run kick start to down the Timber Rattlers (10-10) by a final score of 8-4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Friday.

The Cougars' offense picked up right where it left off from Thursday night's victory as the home team jumped out to a 5-0 nothing lead in the first inning. With one out, Daniel Lockhart and Yasiel Balaguert singled prior to a Jacob Rogers walk to load the bases. Danny Canela then split the right side of the infield with a two-run base hit for a 2-0 Cougars' lead. David Bote followed with a walk to reload the bases and Will Remillard connected on a bases clearing double to put the Cougars up 5-0.

Winsconsin's starter Zach Quintana continued to struggle with the Cougar hitters the following inning as Rogers grounded out to bring home Carlos Penalver, who reached on a single, and Canela ripped another RBI single. After two innings it was 7-0 Cougars.

Torrez fooled Wisconsin swingers for four straight innings, before giving up his first hit in the fifth. The Timber Rattlers finally took a chunk out of the Cougars' lead in the seventh when Michael Ratterree connected on a one-out double. Clint Coulter drove home Ratterree with a triple for the Timber Rattlers first run. David Denson plated Coulter with a single and the next two hitters from Wisconsin reached, forcing Torrez out of the game. Juan Paniagua gave up a RBI single to Angel Ortega to cut the Cougars lead 7-3.

Michael Ratterree inched Wisconsin within three as he belted a solo blast over the left field wall in the eighth. Paniagua struck out the side to avoid a continued rally.

Penalver pushed it back to a four-run lead for the Cougars when he tripled home Bote.

Torrez (3-0) picked up the win finishing the evening with six and one-third innings of one-run baseball while striking out a season high seven batters. Quintana (0-1) suffered the loss being charged with seven earned runs in four innings. Paniagua earned his first save of the season with one run allowed in two and two-third innings.

The series between the Cougars and the Timber Rattlers will continue on Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Duane Underwood (0-0, 1.13) will take the mound for the Cougars against Wisconsin's Taylor Williams (1-0, 4.50). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or log on to kccougars.com.
