Hartford, CT - The Hartford Yard Goats pitching combined for a season-high 17 strikeouts en-route to a 4-2 victory against the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Rico Garcia registered seven strikeouts in five solid innings, while earning his Eastern League leading sixth win of the season. The Yard Goats scored three times in the third inning off Sea Dogs lefty Darwinzon Hernandez, who was just optioned to the minors by the Boston Red Sox today. Tyler Nevin ripped a two-run single and Colton Welker followed with an RBI hit for the rally. Alan Trejo cracked an inside the park home run. Hartford closer Ben Bowden struck out the side in the ninth inning to register his EL leading 16 save in 16 chances. The Yard Goats have won five of their last six games to reach a season-high seven games above .500 for the second time.
Hartford starter Rico Garcia faced the minimum nine batters through three innings, while recording six strikeouts. The Yard Goats took a 3-0 lead with a rally in the third inning off Sea Dogs starter Darwinzon Hernandez. Tyler Nevin had a two RBI single and Colton Welker contributed with an RBI single in the frame. Hernandez was lifted after throwing 30 pitches in the inning.
The Sea Dogs made it a one-run game with a two run homer by Josh Tobias in the fourth inning. The Yard Goats added a fourth run on Alan Trejo's inside the park home run in the fifth. Trejo hit a fly ball down the right field line and Keith Curcio couldn't reach it. He slipped on the play and Trejo never stopped running for the Yard Goats first since Max White on June 14, 2017 vs Trenton.
The Yard Goats continue the three-game series against the Sea Dogs on Wednesday night at 7:05. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and 100.9 FM and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
