Y'alls Lose to New Jersey on Ninth Inning Home Run
May 19, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - With the Florence Y'alls up by a run in the top of the ninth inning, New Jersey's Trevor Abrams hit a go-ahead two-run home run to put the Jackals up 5-4, and the Jackals would not give up a run in the home half of the inning to steal a win at Thomas More Stadium Wednesday night.
This is the second blown save of the season for the Y'alls (1-4). Florence had a chance to beat Tri-City on Saturday as well before a two-run home run also crushed the Y'alls in the ninth inning.
Tied 1-1 after an inning of play, Florence held a lead most of the game thanks to an AJ Bumpass solo home run to left field in the second inning. The score would remain 2-1 until the Y'alls tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning courtesy of an Alberti Chavez RBI-double and a fielder's choice groundout RBI for Craig Massey.
The Jackals (4-1) kept it close and answered the Florence scoring with a pair of runs of their own in the seventh. Both runs scored without a hit, one on an error and one on a sacrifice fly RBI for Santiago Chirino. Florence left an insurance run on third base to end the bottom of the eighth before the big fly in the ninth by Abrams ultimately gave New Jersey the win.
The loss comes despite 15 total strikeouts for Y'alls pitchers. Starter Yasel Santana lasted four innings for Florence and struck out five, followed by five strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief work for Grant Hockin. Justin King also had four strikeouts. Juan Perez struck out one in the ninth inning for New Jersey to snag his first save of the season. Jorge Tavarez gets the win, and Leonardo Rodriguez takes the no-decision after a five inning start.
Alfredo Marte had two more hits and a run batted in for the Jackals, while AJ Bumpass and Axel Johnson each had two hits apiece for the Y'alls.
Tonight's game did not start until 8:42 PM thanks to a two-plus hour rain delay. It ended exactly three hours after it started.
New Jersey has now won its first two series of the season and will look for the sweep tomorrow (technically speaking, later tonight), something the Jackals accomplished only once all of last season. Jared Milch gets the ball for the Jackals against right-hander Jared Cheek for the Y'alls. First pitch is at 6:34 PM.
