THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia fell in walk-off fashion to the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-2 on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds took the early advantage, scoring twice in the first behind an RBI double off the bat of Creede Simpson. The Power clawed back with one in the third on a Delmarva error and then tied it in the sixth when JaCoby Jones blasted a solo home run. However, in the ninth, Austin Wynns came through with a high chopper back to the mound scoring Simpson to give Delmarva the victory. Yhonathan Barrios was charged with the loss while Alexander Santana vultured the win. JaCoby Jones extended his hit streak to 10 games in the loss and blasted his sixth home run in eight days.
FLOCK OFF: West Virginia and Delmarva wrap up their final series of the 2014 season tonight. The Power and Shorebirds have played each other 131 times since 2005 and the all-time series is knotted up West Virginia 66-66. The Power hold a 26-32 mark at when visiting Salisbury.
NOT ONE, NOT TWO, NOT THREE: JaCoby Jones was named the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week on Monday after blasting five home runs over the course of a week. The shortstop hit .500 (12-for-24) over the week with a double, five home runs and seven RBIs. Jones became the first Power player since Jose Osuna in 2012 to homer in three consecutive games on Sunday. JaCoby was also the first Power player to homer twice in a game in 2014 and is now third in the league in long balls.
WHEELER TO THE BIGS: Zelous Wheeler became the 41st former Power player to reach to Major Leauges on Monday night in his debut with the New York Yankees. Wheeler is the fourth former member of the Power to make his debut this season, along with Gregory Polanco, Casey Sadley and Rudy Owens.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL STAR: Five former Power players were named to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star game with the Altoon Curve. Alen Hanson (2012), Elias Diaz (2011 & 2012), Willy Garcia (2012), Drew Maggi (2011) and Ryan Beckman (2011) were all named All-Stars. The Pirates organization now has had 14 mid-season All-Stars. Former Power outfielder Michael Brantley ('06 & '07) was named a MLB All-Star with the Cleveland Indians.
MAKING MOVES: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Michael Fransoso to the West Virginia Power roster from Jamestown prior to Monday's matchup in Delmarva. Fransoso was a member of the Power Opening Day roster, appearing in 22 games with a .215 average, one home run and two RBIs. To make room for Fransoso the Pirates placed Harold Ramirez on to the Power Disabled List retroactive to July 3. Ramirez currently holds a franchise record and SAL season-best hit streak at 23 games.
THE HITS KEEP COMING: Harold Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games last week. Ramirez has now broken Starling Marte's Power franchise record of 22 games and passed Pat Valaika (Asheville) for longest hit streak in the South Atlantic League this season. The outfielder is hitting .346 since the streak started on June 5.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 12: The West Virginia Power battle the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, July 12, at Appalachian Power Park. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will recieve an Appalachian Power Park replica.
POWER POINTS: Pittsburgh made a flurry of moves that effected the Power on Thursday. Justin Maffei and Ashley Ponce were both promoted to Bradenton from West Virginia. Andy Otamendi was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster while Clario Perez was promoted from the Jamestown roster after two days. Finally, Danny Collins and Francisco Diaz were activated from the Power Disabled List.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell in walk-off fashion to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4. Kolten Wong homered in the ninth to win it... Indianapolis topped Lehigh Valley 4-2. Casey Sadler tossed six innings, allowing two runs... Altoona was swept in a doubleheader, falling in game on 8-4 and game two 11-5-... Bradenton toppled St. Lucie 11-5. Walker Gourley went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs... Jamestown's matchup with Batavia was postponed.
