Suns Cough up Six-Run Lead in 9-7 Loss to Lakewood

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (13-8, 57-34) couldn't hang onto a six-run lead on Wednesday, and wound up losing the final game of a three-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws (7-14, 34-56) by a final score of 9-7. The teams combined for 27 hits in the contest.

The BlueClaws took the lead for good in the top of the seventh. With one out and the game tied at 7-7, 1B Zack Green doubled to center field. After a groundout and a walk issued to LF Larry Greene, 3B Mitch Walding singled on a ground ball up the middle, driving in Zack Green for what turned out to be the winning run. That Walding single sent Larry Greene to third, and he scored the insurance run when the next hitter, catcher Jose Mayorga, singled to right to set the final score.

Hagerstown had taken a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Hagerstown scored six runs in the frame on seven hits, and wound up sending 11 batters to the plate. The biggest hit of the innings was a two-run double by RF Narcio Mesa, which came with the bases loaded and no one out and started the scoring in the inning. First baseman Carlos Lopez also had a run producing double in the inning, his 13th double of the year.

Lakewood began its comeback with a two-run homerun off the bat of 2B Andrew Pullin in the third. In the fourth the BlueClaws were able to tie the score at 6-6 by garnering four runs on five hits while sending eight men to the plate. Lakewood wound up having two innings in which they sent eight to the plate.

The BlueClaws broke the 6-6 tie with a run in the fifth, their third straight inning scoring a run. The Suns answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own, coming thanks to an RBI groundout by Lopez. That set the stage for Lakewood to take control in the seventh.

LHP Scott Harris (2-0) collected the win for Lakewood. He threw three innings in relief, allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out one. RHP Cody Davis (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He pitched two innings in relief, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one. RHP Ulises Joaquin threw the ninth for the BlueClaws to record his seventh save in eight chances this season. Neither team's starter lasted more than 3.2 innings.

The Suns next head to Lexington, KY to battle the Lexington Legends (8-12, 37-53) in a four-game series, which begins on Thursday July 10. The Suns will send LHP Hector Silvestre (4-6) to the mound for his 16th start and appearance of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
