Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - Nothing has gone the Greenville Drive's (3-18, 37-53) way recently, and Wednesday was no exception, as the Charleston RiverDogs put together an eight-run bottom of the eighth to come away with a 13-6 victory.
With the loss, the Drive were swept in the three-game series and have now lost 16 games in a row.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the eighth, the Drive received three consecutive RBI singles from Carlos Coste, Aneudis Peralta and Cole Sturgeon to take the lead, but the lead would be short-lived.
The RiverDogs took the lead back after an RBI double by Jackson Valera and a two-run double from Gosuke Katoh off Jason Garcia (0-1). Following a pitching change to Raynel Velette, a Drive error brought home a fourth run in the frame, and they tacked on even more when Dustin Fowler delivered an RBI double and Mike Ford cranked a three-run homer to cap the scoring.
Charleston reliever Evan Rutckyj (3-0) benefitted greatly from the big inning, picking up the win after throwing one and a third innings to close out the game.
The RiverDogs got the offense going early on Wednesday, taking a 3-0 lead after their first three batters of the contest. Michael O'Neill and Tyler Wade singled to begin the first, and Fowler followed with a three-run blast to right.
The Drive chipped away the next two innings and tied the game up at three. Carlos Asuaje doubled leading off the second and later scored on a Charleston error, and he smacked an RBI double in the third to cut the lead to 3-2. Kevin Mager then drove an RBI triple to right to tie things up.
Prior to the Drive taking the lead in the top of the eighth, Charleston went up 5-3 in the sixth on Valera's RBI single and Katoh's RBI on a squeeze bunt.
Fowler went 2-5 with four RBI to lead the RiverDogs, while Payton and Valera added two hits apiece and Katoh drove in three. Asuaje and Peralta each picked up two hits for Greenville.
The Drive return to Fluor Field on Thursday to begin a four-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets. First pitch is set for 7:05. RH Teddy Stankiewicz (6-6, 4.34) is scheduled to take the ball for the Drive, and the GreenJackets will send LH Luis Ysla (5-5, 2.47) to the mound.
