THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia dropped a 5-1 final to the Hickory Crawdads on Wednesday night. The Power got on the board first when Reese McGuire plated Jeff Roy. The Crawdads, however, took control from that point on. In the second, Nomar Mazara and Lewis Brinson went back-to-back with home runs to lead off the frame. Hickory was not done with the long ball as Brinson blasted his second home run of the night in the fourth. The Crawdads capped off the scoring in the sixth when Ryan Cordell and Mazara led off the inning with another set of back-to-back solo home runs. Five homers were the most allowed by Power pitching in a single game this season. Buddy Borden was charged with his sixth loss of the season while Ryne Slack earned his sixth win.
BYE BYE MUDBUGS: West Virginia's lead over Hickory has been erased as the series is now tied 49-49. West Virginia is 30-20 all-time against the Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park. The Power are 19-28 at L.P. Frans Stadium. West Virginia will return to Hickory with a three-game series at the end of July.
THE HITS KEEP COMING: Harold Ramirez notched a single in the first on Tuesday and extended his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. Ramirez has now broken Starling Marte's Power franchise record of 22 games and passed Pat Valaika (Asheville) for longest hit streak in the South Atlantic League this season. The outfielder is hitting .346 since the streak started on June 5.
OTAMENDI UP: The Pittsburgh Pirates placed left-hander Andy Otamendi on the Power roster before Tuesday's game. To make room for the southpaw, Clario Perez was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster.
OH SO CLOSE: The West Virginia Power have still yet to walk-off with a victory in the 2014 season. The Power threatened on multiple occassions in Monday's 15 inning loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Power stranded three in scoring position in extra innings. The Power have watched seven walk-offs in 2014.
LONG BALL NOT SO FRIENDLY: The West Virginia Power have allowed 76 home runs this season, the most of any team in the South Atlantic League. 14 of those blasts have come during this homstand. On Wednesday night, the Power gave up five solo home runs to the Hickory Crawdads, the most allowed by West Virginia pitching in a singe game this season. The Crawdads have mashed 14 home runs against the Power, second-most of any West Virginia opponent this season.
BETTER TOGETHER: The Power currently have multiple double-digit hitting streaks alive in Harold Ramirez's 23-game band and Edwin Espinal's 12-game streak. Espinal extended his streak to 12 games with a second straight multi-hit affair on Tuesday.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 12: The West Virginia Power battle the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, July 12, at Appalachian Power Park. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will recieve an Appalachian Power Park replica.
