Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Kannapolis, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds avoided a series sweep in Kannapolis with a 6-5 victory over the Intimidators on Thursday night. Delmarva's win hinged on a five-run fifth inning in which the Shorebirds drew three bases-loaded walks.
Luis Gonzalez ran into trouble in the third inning, as he allowed four runs, including a bases-clearing double by Brett Austin. The Shorebirds' starter bounced back to retire the next nine batters he faced.
Delmarva rallied in the fifth inning with a little help from the Intimidators' bullpen. RBI singles by Jeff Kemp and Creede Simpson cut the Kannapolis in half to 4-2. Andrew Mitchell came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out. The Intimidators' reliever then walked Conor Bierfeldt, Austin Wynns and Gregory Lorenzo to hand Delmarva a 5-4 advantage.
The Shorebirds tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning. Bierfeldt roped a double to lead off the frame, part of a 3-for-4 night for the outfielder. Bierfeldt later scored on an infield single by Gregory Lorenzo on a swinging bunt in front of the mound.
Kannapolis was a few feet away from tying the game in the ninth inning. With a runner on and two outs, Danny Hayes hammered a deep drive to right field. The ball hit high off the wall, just barely staying in the ballpark. Lucas Herbst then whipped a throw to second base, throwing out Hayes for the final out of the game.
Gonzalez improved to 3-0 with the victory, and Jon Keller picked up his fourth save with Delmarva. Robinson Leyer dropped to 4-5 with the loss, taking responsibility for all five runs in the fifth.
The Shorebirds return home for the 4th of July at Perdue Stadium. Right-hander Nick Cunningham (0-0, 0.00) will make his Shorebirds' debut against Lakewood right-hander Julio Reyes (1-2, 3.91). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Perdue Stadium.
