Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds raced back in the ninth inning with three runs, but Kannapolis held on for a 6-4 victory. Delmarva brought the tying run to the plate, but Jose Brito buckled down after initial shaky moments. A grand slam by Carl Thomore in the second inning was the big play of the evening. The Shorebirds will look to avoid a sweep on Thursday evening.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Robinson Leyer will start the finale for Kannapolis. Leyer has an even 4-4 record with a 2.82 ERA ERA for the Intimidators. The right-hander lost his only start against the Delmarva Shorebirds on May 24th. In that start, Leyer allowed seven runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. His last time out, Leyer tossed six shutout innings against the Charleston RiverDogs.
19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles won 6-4 over the Texas Rangers after a late rain delay at Camden Yards. Adam Jones hit his 16th home run of the season, as Baltimore erased a 4-0 defi- cit, dug early by Chris Tillman. The O's are now 45-39 and they kept pace with Toronto who won on a walkoff homer by Edwin Encarnacion.
THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
