San Diego Gulls News Release
LAS VEGAS â Justin Kelly scored 2:54 into overtime lifting the Las Vegas Wranglers to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Gulls Tuesday night at the Orleans Arena.
It was a seesaw battle all the way in the first ever meeting between these two Pacific Division rivals. The Gulls led 1-0... Vegas tied it... The Gulls led 2-1... Vegas tied it again... Then the Wranglers had the final answer in overtime, notching their third straight win.
The Gulls (1-1-1) dominated the first period out-shooting the Wranglers 21-9, but thanks to some stingy goaltending by Marc Magliarditi, the game remained scoreless.
Greg Barber finally solved Magliarditi 8:16 into the second period for his first professional goal. After taking a feed from Mike Garrow at center ice, Barber sidestepped a Wrangler defenseman, then beat Magliarditi blocker-side.
The lead was short-lived however as Vegas (4-1-1) tied it 28 seconds later. Greg Day won a faceoff deep in the Gulls zone that slid toward Jason McBain. The Wrangler defenseman picked up the loose puck, skated in from the corner and punched it by Trevor Koenig for his third goal of the season.
Dennis Purdie, making his season debut, regained San Diego's lead with a power-play goal 2:42 into the third period. Miguel Delisle grabbed a pass from Billy Tibbetts, cut to the net and fired a back-hander that Magliarditi stopped. Purdie, however, was right there to scoop up the rebound and put in his first goal.
Vegas answered again at 9:17 on Jeff Attard's first goal of the season. Kelly took the puck in the corner and snapped a bad-angle shot that handcuffed Koenig. Attard pounced on the rebound and easily tapped it in. Day notched another assist, his second of the game. He now leads the ECHL with 10 helpers.
San Diego out-chanced the Wranglers in overtime. Mark Pederson had the best opportunity, but rang a shot off the right goal post. Minutes later, Kelly skated down the right wing and slid home a wrist shot along the ice.
Notes: Koenig (sore groin) and Purdie (sinus infection) were both activated from injured reserve Tuesday... Barber (1g, 2a) has a point on three of the four San Diego goals this season... Day has at least one point in all six Wranglers games... The Gulls are 1 for 18 on the power play so far this season... They've allowed one power-play goal in 21 chances... After a three-game schedule in October, San Diego will play 13 games in November... Vegas defenseman Dave Cousineau is the younger brother of San Diego defenseman Dan Cousineau. It was the first time the two played against each other in a competitive game...
The Gulls open their home schedule Saturday against Idaho at 7:05 p.m. The first 10,000 fans will get their very own pair of Gulls Thunder Sticks, courtesy of 4-Lawyer.com. And in honor of Halloween, it's going to be a blackout...so fans are encouraged to dress in ALL BLACK to show their Halloween spirit!
