Chiefs' Irbe Named ITECH Hockey ECHL Saver Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Johnstown's Arturs Irbe is the ITECH Hockey ECHL Saver of the Week for October 20-26.

The two-time National Hockey League All-Star was 2-0 with a 1.50 goals against average and a .950 save percentage while helping the Chiefs improve to 4-1-0, tied for first place in the Northern Division with defending Kelly Cup Champion Atlantic City. Assigned to Johnstown by the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL, Irbe made 27 saves, including 15 in the third period, in a 5-2 win against Texas on Wednesday. Irbe turned aside all 24 shots he faced over the final two periods and finished with 28 saves in a 6-1 win at Dayton on Friday.

The native of Riga, Latvia is 3-0-0 with a league-leading save percentage of .953. He is tied for the ECHL lead in wins and is tied for eighth in goals against average with 1.33.

Irbe is 213-234-78 in 558 career NHL games and only Dominik Hasek of Detroit has more wins among European-born goaltenders. In the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Irbe won 10 games and had the third best goals against average (1.67) and save percentage (.938) while helping the Hurricanes advance to the Stanley Cup Finals where they lost in five games to Detroit.
