October 10, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release

The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, were squeezed by the Worcester IceCats, 3-2, in their home opener, before a sellout crowd of 9,916 fans. It was a scoreless first period at the Verizon Wireless Arena tonight.

The Worcester IceCats were the first to light the lamp at 9:00 of the second period with a goal from Marc Brown, his first of the season from Jon Coleman and Jeff Panzer.

The Monarchs tried to retaliate with opportunities from right wing Dan Welch and left wing Jeff Giuliano but neither could capitalize on breakaways. The third time was the charm as right wing John Tripp scored on a three-on-one breakaway alongside Bryan Muir and Steve Kelly at 15:01 of the second.

The IceCats gained the lead again just 2:21 seconds later as Jeff Panzer fired the puck past Monarchs goaltender Milan Hnilicka. Brown and Ernie Hartlieb assisted on Panzer's goal.

Tripp made it a two-goal night for him at 3:01 of the third period by tipping Kelly's slap shot past IceCats goaltender Reinhard Divis. The goal was scored on the power play as Aaron MacKenzie sat in the penalty box for high sticking.

Christian Backman scored the game-winning power play goal at 14:30 of the third.

Monarch goaltender Hnilicka made 25 saves on the 27 shots he faced and IceCats goaltender Divis stopped 23 of 25 shots.

The Monarchs will face off against the Lowell Lock Monsters on Saturday, October 11 at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena and the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, October 15 at home at 7:05 p.m.
