Falcons Begin 10th Anniversary Season in Providence Tonight
October 10, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA â The Springfield Falcons begin their 10th campaign tonight versus the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donut Center in Rhode Island. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Falcons will face-off against the Albany River Rats in the club's 2003-04 home opener at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday beginning at 7:35 p.m.
Last season's team goal-scoring leaders Jeff Taffe and Frank Banham as well as midseason goaltending acquisition Jean-Marc Pelletier are among 10 returning players from the 2002-03 Falcons. Right wing Fredrik Sjostrom, a Phoenix Coyotes' 2001 first-round draft choice who joined Springfield very late last season, is another returnee.
New additions to the Falcons this season include perennial AHL All-Star twin brothers Peter and Chris Ferraro, last season's Hobey Baker Award runner-up netminder David LeNeveu, and defenseman Mike Wilson, who has 335 games of NHL experience.
Head coach Marty McSorley begins his second season with the Falcons. Last season, the former NHL defenseman led the Falcons to the playoffs and an opening-round win over the rival Hartford Wolf Pack. McSorley is joined behind the Springfield bench this season by assistant coach Gord Dineen and player/assistant coach Gary Shuchuk.
Chance for $10,000: Besides great AHL hockey action this season, Falcons fans have a chance to win $10,000. If the Falcons score a goal at exactly the 10:00 mark of the second period of a home game this season, a fan in attendance will randomly be selected to win the prize.
Renovation Adjustments: Please note that due to the current renovation of the Civic Center, a temporary box office will be in place along East Court Street across the street from the Civic Center Parking Garage beginning next weekend. Also starting next weekend, the main entrance of the Civic Center will be near the corner of East Court Street and Dwight Street. Free parking on game nights will again be available this season in the Columbus Center, Civic Center and I-91 parking garages.
Radio broadcasts: Tonight's game in Providence will not be broadcast on radio, however, the Falcons' home opener on Saturday will be carried on The ZONE â Sports Radio 640. Over 70 games this campaign will be broadcast. Besides tonight's match-up, the following contests will not be on the radio: October 17th vs. Manchester, October 24th at Worcester, November 7th vs. Norfolk, and November 14th vs. Worcester. If the New York Yankees reach the World Series, the Falcons' games on October 18th vs. Providence and October 25th at Albany are scheduled to be preempted.
