VanOene, Toivonen lead P-Bruins to win

The Providence Bruins opened up the 2003-04 season on Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, skating to a 5-2 victory over their Atlantic Division rival Springfield Falcons. The Bruins scored four times in the second period and got points from 11 different players.

Bruin left wing Darren VanOene notched two goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal. Defenseman Zdenek Kutlak and forwards Kris Vernarsky and Blake Bellefeuille also scored. Rookie centers Sergei Zinovjev and Brett Nowak each chipped in with two assists.

Rookie goaltender Hannu Toivonen, the Boston Bruins' first pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, was outstanding, stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced.

The Bruins announced tonight the signing of defenseman Brian White to a tryout contract. White notched 2-5-7 totals and 34 PIM in 51 games with Providence last season.

The Bruins visit the Worcester IceCats on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. All the action will be broadcast live on WDDZ AM-550.
