(October 11, 2003) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that Mike Penny has been appointed general manager of the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League. Penny will continue to serve as the Toronto Maple Leafs' assistant general manager and director of player personnel in addition to his current role of governor of the St. John's Maple Leafs.
"Our player development pipeline will be in good hands under the direction of Mike Penny, an experienced manager," said Ferguson. "His insight and expertise will be invaluable to the St. John's Maple Leafs franchise, our coaches and our players."
Penny, 56, joined the Maple Leafs as director of player personnel July 31, 2000 and added the assistant general manager portfolio to his duties following the 2001-02 season. Before joining the Maple Leafs, Penny spent the previous 20 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. He served as assistant general manager, chief scout, director of player development and scouting, and vice-president of amateur scouting during his tenure with the Canucks.
