Bulldogs drop season opener to Amerks

ROCHESTER, NY - The Hamilton Bulldogs opened the 2003-04 season with a 2-1 loss versus the Rochester Americans at the Blue Cross Arena on Friday night.

Bulldogs rookie Eero Somervuori opened the scoring for the Bulldogs by snapping a shot past Amerks goaltender Tom Askey at the 12:49 of the first period. Hamilton defenceman Patrick Traverse earned an assist on Somervuori's first AHL goal.

The Amerks would respond with a pair of goals in the second period. Jason Pominville and Milan Bartovic scored for Rochester. The Amerks out shot the Bulldogs by a 24-3 margin in second period.

There was no scoring in the third period.

Despite the loss, Bulldogs goaltender Eric Fichaud earned the game's first star after making 40 saves. Amerks netminder Tom Askey stopped 19 shots on the night.

Hamilton's next action will take place on Saturday night as the Bulldogs travel to Cleveland to take on the Barons. Bulldogs fans can listen to Derek Wills call all the action, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:55 p.m. on Hamilton's 820 CHAM.

The Bulldogs will return to Hamilton on Thanksgiving Day - Monday, October 13th at 4:00 p.m. for their home opener against the Toronto Roadrunners.
