Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (8-5) entered Tuesday with 16 home runs-they left Polar Park with 20 after a 9-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons (9-4). Altogether, the WooSox scored four in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and homered in all three of those innings against Buffalo starter TJ Zeuch.

In the second, Jeter Downs and Jonathan Arauz cracked back-to-back hits with one out. Downs scored on a Cesar Puello groundout, and Arauz came home after a Michael Gettys single. That brought up Jarren Duran, who put a 1-2 fastball over the shrubs in center to make it 4-0 Worcester. The homer added another to Duran's team-leading fifth and gave him eight RBI on the homestand, also a team best.

After the Bisons got on the board on an RBI single from Dilson Herrera, Danny Santana joined the home run party in the fourth. The switch hitter, batting left, hit a screaming liner to the opposite field and over the left field wall for his second homer in as many games.

Then, in the fourth, Jonathan Arauz-returned from Boston Monday-blasted his first homer over the Worcester Wall. Two batters later, Michael Gettys smacked his first of the year after hitting a franchise-record 31 long balls with Triple A-El Paso in 2019.

Worcester led 7-1 through five, spurred by the homers and starter Daniel Gossett. Entering the sixth, Gossett had allowed one run on four hits, along with five strikeouts. But Buffalo came in to the day leading Triple-A East in batting average (.291) and began the sixth with a walk and a single. That brought up Kevin Smith, who crushed the first pitch he saw from Gossett over the wall in left center for a three-run job, cutting the WooSox lead to 7-4. Gossett got out of the inning, finishing his day at six innings of work, allowing four runs with six strikeouts.

Once again, Worcester answered with a crooked number, this time in the seventh. After a one-out walk from Jack Lopez, Danny Santana doubled. Santana's third hit chased Buffalo reliever James Dykstra from the game, and his replacement, Nick Allgeyer, walked Chris Herrmann to load the bases. That sent Jeter Downs to the plate, who cracked a single up the middle to score two. Downs was thrown out trying to stretch the knock in to a double, but his fourth and fifth RBI put the home team up 9-4.

On the mound, WooSox relievers continued their dominance, adding to the team's 3.60 ERA at home with three combined scoreless innings from Matt Hall, Brandon Workman and Kevin McCarthy (Eduard Bazardo began an at-bat, but exited five pitches in after being examined by the training staff). The victory marked Worcester's fifth in a row and sixth in seven games at home.

The WooSox continue the six-game series at Polar Park on Wednesday against the Buffalo Bisons at 6:35 p.m. Radio coverage starts at 6:15 on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Buffalo's Alek Manoah (2-0, 0.00), Toronto's number five prospect per MLB.com, faces Stephen Gonsalves (1-0, 4.82).
