Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Simeon Woods-Richardson had full command of all of his pitches on Monday against the Braves. The Mets second-round draft choice from 2018 spun five no-hit innings on Monday and led the Fireflies to a 5-2 series-opening win against Rome. Woods-Richardson struck out a career-high eight and picked up his first win of the season.
The five innings were also a career-high for the 18-year-old. Woods-Richardson (W, 1-6) walked one hitter on Monday, the only base-runner he allowed to reach.
Columbia (22-35) used a big third inning to take the first lead. Juan Uriarte set the table with a blast to the right-center field alley. Uriarte swung from second to third when Rome (26-31) centerfielder Henry Quintero had trouble fielding the ball. Gerson Molina soon walked against starter Alan Rangel (L, 4-4) and with runners at the corners Ronny Mauricio yanked a ground ball through the hole on the right side of the diamond. His single gave the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Fireflies weren't done. The next hitter, Chandler Avant, drove in both runners with a double to the same right-centerfield gap. After Avant advanced to third on a wild pitch, he tagged and scored on Mark Vientos' sacrifice fly to left field. The home team was ahead, 4-0.
The lead stretched to five in the fifth. Brian Sharp drove in Chase Chambers with a single up the middle. Columbia had a 5-0 lead before Rome tallied a hit on Monday.
The visitors would score, though, soon enough. While reliever Allan Winans hurled a scoreless sixth inning, the Braves plated two runs against the righty in the seventh. First, Trey Harris drilled a double into the left-field gap that brought in Greg Cullen. Logan Brown then knocked in Harris with a base hit. Jake Simon was then called upon out of the Fireflies bullpen. The lefty quickly ended the threat and retired the side when the first batter he faced, Griffin Benson, grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
Simon and Chris Viall (S, 2) combined to close the door in the ninth.
Sharp tallied a pair of hits on Monday. The lefty slugger notched both of those singles against Rome's lefty reliever, Dilmer Mejia.
Tuesday's matchup against Rome will begin at 7:05 ET. Right-hander Willy Taveras (3-5, 3.99) will take the mound and face Braves southpaw Gabriel Noguera (2-2, 4.24). Tuesday's game is a Supercuts $2 Tuesday. If the Fireflies score two runs, all fans receive $2 off a haircut from Supercuts.
Fans can also enjoy $2 hot dogs, popcorn and fountain sodas all night long.
