Woodies Sweep Myrtle Beach, Win Francise-Best Seventh Straight

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Wood Ducks got out to a 4-0 lead early, and were able to hold on late, sweeping the four game series from the Pelicans with a 5-3 victory, Thursday.

It is the first time in franchise history that Down East (20-8) has swept a four-game set, and the win marks the seventh in a row, which is also the most all time.

The Wood Ducks struck in the first inning, when Yonny Hernandez and Leody Taveras led off with back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners, Taveras stole second and the throw down got into center field, scoring Hernandez, for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Disobel Arias brought home Taveras on an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

The Woodies would add on single runs in the third and fourth. Hernadez reached on an infield single in the third with one out, and then Taveras doubled to right. With two in scoring position, Anderson Tejeda bounced a ball off of Luke Reynolds' glove at first, scoring Hernandez, to make it 3-0. The following inning Julio Pablo Martinez led off with a walk, stole second, and came into score on a Yanio Perez single to right.

Reid Anderson (win, 2-0) didn't allow a hit through his first three innings, using a pair of double-play balls to work around three early walks. The Pelicans (7-21) would get to him for the first time in the fourth. Carlos Sepulveda reached on an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single from Tyler Payne. One batter later, Jimmy Herron tripled down the right field line to make it a 4-2 game. Heron would score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 4-3.

Anderson worked six innings, giving up three runs on three hits, he walked five, and struck out seven, a season-high.

Pelicans starter Paul Richan (loss, 2-2) went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned), on five hits, he walked two and struck out four.

The Woodies plated a big insurance run in the seventh. Perez singled, moved to second on a walk to Eric Jenkins, and then scored on a Hernandez sac fly to make it 5-3. Hernandez reached base three times in the game, doing so for the seventh time in his last 12 games.

Cole Uvila retired the first six men he faced out of the bullpen, but then allowed a single and a double in the ninth to put the tying run in scoring position. He then picked up his fourth strikeout of the night for the first out of the frame, and then Corey Ragsdale handed the ball off to Michael Matuella (save, 1) who picked up a strikeout and popout to seal the win.

The Woodies are back in action tomorrow night, when they travel to face the Fayetteville Woodpeckers for the first game of a three game set. Right-hander Noah Bremer (1-0, 2.91) will make the start for the Woodies, opposed by Woodpeckers lefty Parker Mushinski (0-0, 2.33).
