Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Pacific Coast League announced today that two Sacramento River Cats players have been voted onto its roster for the 17th Annual Triple-A All-Star Game, which will be played July 14 (4 p.m. PST) at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island (Pawtucket Red Sox). The two River Cats players that will represent Sacramento in the game are right-handed pitcher Mike Wood and second baseman Adam Morrissey.
¬ÅWe are all excited for Mike and Adam, as they have both worked very hard to get where they are, ¬Â River Cats Senior Vice President and General Manager Gary Arthur said. ¬ÅThere are a number of players on this season ¬â¢s club who are worthy of playing in the All-Star Game. Baseball is a team game. And, having two players voted onto the team is a great tribute to all of the guys we have on the field this season. ¬Â
Wood, 24, leads all of baseball with 11 wins (11-3) and is second in the PCL with a 2.80 ERA. He is tied for fourth in the league with 66 SO and is fifth in the PCL with 90.0 IP. He has won his last four starts, going 4-0 with a 3.96 ERA in June. Wood is 7-1 with a 1.84 ERA in nine starts at Raley Field and 4-2 with a 4.21 ERA in six road starts.
He split last season between Sacramento and Oakland. Wood went 9-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 16 starts with the River Cats and 2-1 with a 10.54 ERA in seven games (one start) with the A ¬â¢s. This season marks his fourth in professional baseball, after being selected by the A ¬â¢s in the 10th round of the 2001 Draft out of the University of North Florida. This is the first time he has been selected to play in an All-Star Game.
Morrissey, 23, is batting .340 (70-for-206) with 8 HR and 34 RBI after 54 games with the River Cats. He is the league ¬â¢s seventh-best hitter. He is batting .375 (33-for-88) with 4 HR and 14 RBI in 21 games in June, and he hit in 18 consecutive games (matching a club record) from May 24 to June 17.
This season marks Morrissey ¬â¢s first in Triple-A. He spent all of last season with Midland, batting .267 (125-for-469) with 5 HR and 65 RBI in 125 games. This season is Morrissey ¬â¢s sixth in professional baseball. He was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs as a free agent in February 1999, then he was traded to the A ¬â¢s for Mark Bellhorn in November 2001. The July 14 All-Star Game will mark his first in professional baseball.
The River Cats have had eight players selected to the Triple-A All-Star Game since they relocated to Sacramento in 2000. Shortstop Jose Ortiz (2000), left fielder Eric Byrnes (2001), hitting coach Roy White (2001), right-handed pitcher Frank Lankford (2002) and right-handed pitcher Justin Duchscherer (2003) have all played in the game previously. Right-handed pitchers Erik Hiljus (2001) and Rich Harden (2003) and first baseman Dave McCarty (2003) were all named Triple-A All-Stars, but did not play in the game.
The Triple-A All-Star Game will feature the top Pacific Coast League and International League prospects. The roster for the Pacific Coast League All-Star Team was selected by the managers, general managers and media of the 16 Pacific Coast League teams. Each PCL club will be represented by at least one player in the game, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 (television), Sporting News Radio and Armed Forces Radio.
The 2005 Triple-A All-Star Game will be played in Sacramento at Raley Field. Information regarding the 2005 game will be made available during the next month.
