Nashville Sounds News Release
Justin Reid fanned a career-high 12 batters, Keith McDonald turned in a season-best 4-for-5 effort, and J.R. House belted his third grand slam of the year to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-5 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Thursday evening at Sec Taylor Stadium, snapping a three-game losing streak.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning on a Brendan Harris solo homer, the Sounds exploded for five runs in the top of the third to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Rich Thompson walked to open the frame, advanced to third on a Luis Figueroa single, and scored on Andy Abad's RBI single.
Chris Truby followed with a single to load the bases for House, who matched Albuquerque outfielder Matt Padgett for most PCL grand slams with season when he belted his third bases-loaded blast on an 0-2 pitch from Iowa starter John Koronka. It was House's 10th longball of the year and first RBIs in 15 games.
All-Star outfielder Trenidad Hubbard halved the Sounds' lead in the bottom of the frame by belting a one-out, two-run homer off Reid to make it a 5-3 game, and the host I-Cubs battled back to tie the contest an inning later on Fernando Lunar's two-run bloop single to right.
McDonald â who finished with a season-high four hits â quickly put the Sounds back on top, driving home House with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to put Nashville ahead 6-5. The Sounds added an insurance run in the eighth when Thompson singled, stole his 20th base to pull into a tie for the Pacific Coast League lead, and scored on an RBI single by Figueroa.
Following Lunar's run-scoring bloop in the fourth, Reid retired 13 of his final 14 batters before giving way to Willis Roberts, who notched his fourth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Reid (4-0) matched his career-high with 12 strikeouts to pick up his fourth victory of the season. He allowed five runs on seven hits over eight innings of work. Koronka (6-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs in his five frames.
The Sounds and Cubs wrap up their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Friday evening.
