Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Beavers right-handed pitcher Bart Miadich has been selected to represent the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game, July 14 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I., it was announced today.

Miadich, who tied for the lead in votes among relief pitchers in the league, joins Beavers trainer John Maxwell in representing the Beavers in the annual game.

Miadich, 28, is 3-4 with a 3.57 ERA (14er, 35.1ip) in 31 relief appearances with the Beavers this season. His 12 saves tie him for third-best in the PCL; he is tied for fifth in the league in games.

A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Miadich signed with the San Diego Padres as a minor league free agent following the 2003 season after three campaigns in the Anaheim Angels system. The right-hander made his major league debut with the Angels in 2001, also appearing in one game with the club last season.

Miadich, who began his career in the Boston Red Sox organization, has amassed 69 saves at the Triple-A level over the past four seasons and, with 57, is the career save leader for the Salt Lake Stingers, with whom he played for the better part of the last three seasons.

It's Miadich's second trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game. He represented the Stingers and the PCL in the 2002 game, played in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Both the PCL and International League teams were selected by club personnel, media representatives and league administrators. This year's game marks the seventh consecutive season that teams representing the PCL and IL have met. The prior 10 meetings pitted National League affiliates against American League affiliates.

The game will be broadcast across North America at 4:10 p.m. (Pacific) by ESPN2 and will be distributed worldwide on the Sporting News Radio Network.

Colorado Springs and Tacoma led the way with three players selected to the PCL roster. Albuquerque, Edmonton, Fresno, Iowa, Memphis, Omaha, Sacramento and Tucson each had two players named to the team, while Portland joined five other teams with one representative chosen.

Salt Lake manager Mike Brumley will head up the PCL team. His field staff includes New Orleans manager Chris Maloney and Iowa hitting coach Pat Listach.

Last season, Beavers manager Rick Sweet was the skipper of the PCL team, while first baseman Tagg Bozied and second baseman Bernie Castro represented the Beavers in the game, played at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tenn.

In 2002, third baseman Alex Pelaez and right-handed pitcher Dave Lundquist were selected to the PCL All-Star Team. In 2001, third baseman Sean Burroughs was the lone Portland representative chosen to participate in the mid-season game.

Former Beavers Trenidad Hubbard (Iowa) and Adam Riggs (Salt Lake) were also named to the club on Thursday.

Former Beaver Ernie Young (Buffalo) was selected to the International League All-Star Team, which was announced on Wednesday.

Also this week, it was announced that Portland-San Diego catcher Humberto Quintero and current Portland pitcher Tim Stauffer have been selected to participate in the New York Mercantile Exchange All-Star Futures Game, which will be played Sunday, July 11 at Minute Maid Park in Houston in conjunction with the Major League All-Star game.

The Futures Game matches top United State and international prospects from the minor leagues. The two 25-man rosters include players from all 30 major league organizations. They will play a seven-inning game that will be televised on ESPN2.

Quintero, a native of Venezuela who is currently with the Padres, was named to the World Team while Stauffer, who was transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile recently, was chosen to the U.S. Team roster.

The World Team includes players from six different countries. Players from all full-season minor leagues were eligible to participate.

Additionally, Beavers coach Tom Brown was named as the pitching coach of the U.S. Team.

Last season, Portland shortstop Khalil Greene participated in the Futures Game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Burroughs was selected to play in the 2001 and 2002 games.
