Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - The Down East Wood Ducks jumped on top of the Hillcats early, and wiggled out of jams on the mound to defeat the Hillcats, 5-1, and go ahead two games to none in the series.
Down East (6-3, 56-23) has now won five straight, scoring at least five runs in each game.
The Woodies opened the scoring in the second inning. Josh Altmann worked a walk, and then Yohel Pozo followed with a single, putting runners at the corners. Curtis Terry then ripped a ball off the left field wall to put the Woodies ahead, 1-0. Julio Pablo Martinez then followed with a single to left to push across Pozo and make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Tyler Depreta-Johnson lined a single to left-center to increase the advantage to 3-0.
The Woodies extended the lead in the second against Juan Hillman (3-7). Sam Huff, Diosbel Arias, and Altmann lined three consecutive singles to load the bases, and then Pozo and Terry came through with back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 5-0 Wood Ducks. Altman reached base all four times in the ballgame, while Arias extended his on-base streak to 27 consecutive games.
Hillman gave up five runs on ten hits over six innings, he walked one, and struck out three. He is now 0-3 in four starts against the Wood Ducks this year.
The lone run of the ballgame for Lynchburg (4-5, 36-40) came in the fourth inning against Josh Advocate. Tyler Freeman and Nolan Jones laced back-to-back doubles to break up the shutout at 5-1. Advocate would put a stop to the rally with a double-play ball to end the inning.
Advocate, in his third start of the year, gave up just the one run in four innings, on six hits, and struck out two.
Michael Matuella (win, 3-1) took over for the Woodies in the fifth. After a three up, three down inning he came back out for the sixth, and loaded the bases, but was able to wiggle out of the jam without allowing a run to cross.
Jefferson Medina (save, 3) worked the final three innings, stranding two hits and a walk, while striking out three.
Game three of the four game series is Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Wood Ducks send right-hander Reid Anderson (3-4, 4.02) to the hill to face off with Hillcats righty Cody Morris (1-0, 6.75). The pregame show will begin at 5:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio app.
