Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - Wood Ducks catcher Sam Huff has been selected to participate in the 2019 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, July 7, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Major League Baseball announced today.
Huff becomes the third Wood Duck in three years to participate in the contest, joining Jonathan Hernandez (2017) and Leody Taveras (2018). Rangers lefty CD Pelham was also selected in 2018, shortly after his promotion from Down East to Double-A Frisco.
The Phoenix, Ariz. native began the season at Single-A Hickory, where he hit 15 home runs in 30 games played, posting an OPS of 1.165, before being promoted to the Wood Ducks on May 9. Huff hit his sixth home run of the season for Down East against Lynchburg, Thursday, to give him 21 long balls on the season. He has also slashed .269/.320/.463/.783 with the Woodies, driving in 27 runs in 42 games played.
Huff was originally selected by the Rangers in the 7th round in 2016 out of Arcadia High School (AZ). He spent his first two seasons playing in the Arizona League, before playing his 2018 campaign at Single-A Hickory, where he was named a Rangers Organizational All-Star by MiLB.com. The 21-year-old backstop is rated as the 21st ranked prospect in the Rangers organization by MLB Pipeline.
Huff will play for the American League squad managed by Jim Thome, who played for the Kinston Indians in 1990. Hitting coach Sean Casey likewise played for the Kinston Indians in the 1996 campaign. Huff joins Keys pitcher DL Hall, Pelicans catcher Miguel Amaya, and Hillcats third baseman Nolan Jones to represent the Carolina League in the contest.
It is the 21st annual futures game, and the first time it will be played as an American League vs. National League format, after previously being played as the United States vs. the World. MLB Network will televise the game and MLB.com will provide streaming coverage, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. (ET), from Progressive Field. SiriusXM will provide live radio play-by-play coverage of the Futures Game on MLB Network Radio (XM channel 89; Sirius channel 209) in addition to the SiriusXM app for smart phones and mobile devices, as well as online at www.siriusXM.com/MLB.
