Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans used a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning from Miguel Amaya to jump in front of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and win their fourth-straight game 3-2 from Segra Stadium on Friday night.

The Woodpeckers (5-4, 36-42) got to Pelicans' (4-5, 25-51) starter Erick Leal early on Friday night. After Jacob Meyers struck out to open the ballgame, three-straight batters reached bases to load the bases for Fayetteville in the first. Jeremy Pena drove in the first run of the game when he grounded into a fielders choice and brought Michael Papierski in from third and gave the Woodpeckers a 1-0 lead.

The Pelicans responded in the top of the third inning when Carlos Sepulveda lined a double down the right field line and Jimmy Herron scored all the way from first and the Birds evened the game at one.

In the bottom of the third, Chandler Taylor gave Fayetteville the lead back. After Papierski was hit by a pitch, he scored from first when Taylor blasted a triple off the center field fence that gave the Woodpeckers a 2-1 advantage.

In the middle innings, pitching was the name of the game. Leal settled in after allowing the third-inning run and retired the next 12 batters that he saw before a walk to Enmanuel Valdez in the seventh inning ended his night.

Shawn Dubin matched Leal pitch-for-pitch tonight as the righty notched an ultra-quality start by tossing seven innings and allowing just a run on two hits, while striking out nine.

The Pelicans were able to break the game open after Dubin exited and lended the game to Cesar Rosado (L, 2-4). After Myrtle Beach loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single, Miguel Amaya lined a single to left to give the Birds a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Jesus Camargo (W, 2-2) worked a scoreless frame to lock down the 3-2 win for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans will take on the Woodpeckers in the third game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. RHP Alexander Vargas (1-2, 3.14) will take the bump for the Peliacans against RHP Austin Hansen (1-0, 4.26) for the Woodpeckers.

Coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast and the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Apps.
