Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA - With the bases loaded and the game tied at four in the bottom of the 10th inning, Garrett Benge hit a walk-off single into left field to score Victor Acosta and give the Salem Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Dash on Thursday night at Haley Toyota Field.
After Salem (6-2, 31-44) reliever Joan Martinez (3-0) held the Dash (2-6, 40-32) scoreless in the top of the 10th, Acosta was placed at second base to start the bottom half. Winston-Salem reliever Andrew Perez (0-1) then intentionally walked Edgar Corcino to put runners at first and second.
Following the intentional walk, Marcus Wilson singled through the left side to load the bases. Benge then hit a 1-0 pitch from Perez over the head of left fielder JJ Muno, allowing Acosta to trot home and end the ballgame.
The Dash jumped out to an early lead against Salem starter Bryan Mata in the top of the first. Tyler Frost and Mitch Roman hit back-to-back singles to start off the ballgame. Steele Walker then grounded into a double play, but Frost advanced to third on the play. With Jameson Fisher at the plate, Red Sox catcher Nick Sciortino allowed a passed ball that scored Frost to make it 1-0.
Salem stuck back against Dash starter Zach Lewis in the bottom of the first. To start off the frame, Lewis hit Keith Curcio with a pitch before a Pedro Castellanos single pushed him to second. Then, Acosta hit a single into center field to score Curcio, and a relay throw from Dash shortstop Zach Remillard was errant and went out of play. The error allowed Castellanos to also score and give Salem a 2-1 lead.
After the error, Lewis struck out Corcino and Wilson. However, Benge banged an RBI-triple off the wall in right-center field to bring home Acosta push the Red Sox lead to 3-1.
Winston-Salem responded with a three-run inning of its own in the top of the second. Craig Dedelow led off the frame with a double down the left field line before Muno was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Following a Yeyson Yrizarri strikeout, Evan Skoug deposited a single into left field to load the bases.
With the bases loaded, Frost hit a groundout to the right side to plate Dedelow and cut the Salem lead to one run. Sciortino then allowed another passed ball to get by him, which brought home Muno to tie the ballgame. Then, Roman drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Roman then stole second base while the throw from Sciortino sailed into center field, giving Skoug plenty of time to score from third and reclaim the lead for the Dash at 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox tied it up against Dash reliever Jake Elliott. With two outs, Benge and Tanner Nishioka hit back-to-back singles. Sciortino then lined a ball into center field, scoring Benge to knot the game at four. Both teams were held scoreless over the final three frames before Benge's walk-off winner in the 10th.
Following a seven-game road trip to Salem and Down East, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a six-game homestand from July 4-9 against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and Frederick Keys. The homestand begins with the annual Fourth of July Extravaganza, presented by the City of Winston-Salem, with festivities beginning at 4:30 p.m. and concluding with the city's official fireworks show. After the holiday festivities, the series with Fayetteville concludes with a Fireworks Friday and live music on Saturday. Kids Run the Bases, powered by New Balance Winston-Salem will follow the game on Friday and Saturday.
The three-game set with Frederick begins with a Rayados Day and Lowes Foods Family Sunday. After Sunday's series opener with the Keys, there will be a Free Food Monday, with free hot dogs and frech fries available until 8:30 p.m. as well as corn dogs while supplies last. Tuesday's homestand finale will be a Taco Tuesday, with $2 tacos available at the concession stand behind home plate.
