'Wolves Thumped in Game One on Thursday

The SeaWolves dropped the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader at Hadlock Field to the Portland Sea Dogs, 9-1.

Portland jumped ahead in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Spencer Turnbull. Josh Ockimey led off the inning and clubbed a solo home run to center for a 1-0 lead. Jantzen Witte followed and reached on an error. He stole second and moved to third on an error. Witte scored on a Luke Tendler base hit for a 2-0 advantage.

The Sea Dogs added to their lead in the third. Michael Chavis walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ockimey doubled home Chavis for a 3-0 lead. With two outs, Tate Matheny reached on an error and Tendler followed with a three-run home run to make it 6-0 Portland.

In the bottom of the fourth, Portland went ahead 7-0 when Chavis connected on a solo home run off of reliever Joe Navilhon.

The SeaWolves lone run came in the top of the sixth against Portland starter Matt Kent. Newly acquired Willi Castro led off with a double and moved to third on a Daz Cameron base hit. Josh Lester followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Castro to make it 7-1.

Portland made it a 9-1 game in the bottom of the sixth against Erie reliever Trent Szkutnik. Jeremy Rivera led off with a single and Chad De La Guerra followed with a two-run home run. It was the fourth home run of the game for the Sea Dogs.

Kent (7-7) earned the win for the Sea Dogs allowing a run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts in six innings.

Turnbull (4-6) took the loss for the SeaWolves. He allowed six runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
