Wolves Fall Just Short in Spirited Contest

The Sudbury Wolves dropped a feisty 6-4 contest to the Barrie Colts Friday night at the Sudbury Arena, in a game that featured just about everything. The Wolves gave it their all but came up just short to their divisional rivals.
The Wolves and Colts played a spirited opening period of play. Both teams exchanged scoring chances early, but it was Barrie who drew first blood. Brenden Lemieux just squeaked one past Wolves' starting netminder ZACK BOWMAN, to make it 1-0 Colts. Late in the period, the Wolves had numerous chances on a late powerplay but were unable to capitalize. With just seconds remaining in the opening frame, Colts' goalie, Mackenzie Blackwood was ejected from the game after a match penalty. After the 1st, shots on goal were 18-11 for the Wolves.
The 2nd period was a wild one. The Wolves capitalized early on the 5 minute major assessed to Blackwood, as DMITRY SOKOLOV scored two goals on the powerplay to give the Wolves a 2-1. The Colts answered back with three straight goals of their own, but the Wolves did not quit. MATT SCHAMLZ scored on the rush to cut the lead in half. Following the Wolves' goal, Kevin Labanc scored shorthanded, but once again, the Wolves answered right back on the same powerplay to make it 5-4. This was SCHMALZ second goal of the game. DANNY DESROCHERS and ZACH WILKIE picked up their second helpers of the night. At the end of the period, a line-brawl broke out, including Wolves' goaltender ZACK BOWMAN who dropped the gloves with a Barrie skater. After the 2nd, shots were 29-27 for the Colts.
The Wolves and Colts continued the intense play in the final period. The Wolves carried the play and had several chances but couldn't tie the game. MATTHEW MENNA, who came into the game for Bowman, was strong, and stopped a penalty shot late in the period to keep the Wolves within striking distance. The Wolves came close to evening it up, as the puck crossed the line, but it was disallowed as it was ruled the goalie was pushed into the net. The Colts added an empty-net goal to seal the victory. Final shots were 42-37 in favour of Barrie.
The next Wolves home game is Sunday, December 6th, when the Oshawa Generals visit the Nickel City. Game time is 2:00pm. Tickets are on sale at the Sudbury Arena Box Office and online at greatersudbury.ca/tickets. The Box Office will open at 11am on Sunday.
Fans are encouraged to come out for the Annual Skate with the Wolves tomorrow at the Sudbury Arena from Noon - 1pm. The Wolves ask that the general public make a donation to the TELETHON to attend the free skate. Kids 17 and under who attend the skate and make a donation will receive a free ticket to Sunday's game against the Oshawa Generals. Season Ticket Holders and Cub Club members are free of charge.
