Erie Otters News Release
Erie, PA - It took a late third period goal from Vanya Lodnia and a shootout, but the Otters pulled through a defensive struggle against the Owen Sound Attack in a 3-2 victory Friday night at Erie Insurance Arena.
Owen Sound pressured Erie early and kept play in the Otters' defensive one. They would be rewarded with the game's first goal. Petrus Palmu scored his fourth of the season on the power play to give the Attack the 1-0 lead late in the period.
The second period was more of the same action. Erie did generate a few more chances in the period but couldn't find the net. Michael McNiven was key for the Attack in stalling two power play chances in the frame. The score remained 1-0 Owen Sound at the end of 40 minutes.
The Otters finally broke through on the scoreboard in the third period. Dylan Strome set up Kyle Maksimovich for a one-timer that sped past McNiven. The goal was Maksimovich's 11th of the season and tied the game at one. Owen Sound answered on a four-on-four situation with 7:01 remaining on Jaden Lindo's 10th of the season, giving the Attack the 2-1 advantage.
With less than two minutes remaining Otters head coach Kris Knoblauch elected to pull goaltender Devin Williams for an extra attacker. His decision paid off in a big way, as Vanya Lodnia scored his 10th of the season to tie the game at 2 with 1:36 remaining. The game would go to overtime, but no shots on goal were recorded in the extra frame, leading to a shootout.
Devin Williams stood up against the first two Owen Sound shooters and the Otters's Alex DeBrincat scored on the team's second attempt in the shootout. The final attempt for Owen Sound's Bryson Cianfrone, who's shot rang off the post and out of the net. The Otters 3-2 was their third shoot out win of the season.
The Otters and Attack will face off again tomorrow in the second game of their weekend double-header at Erie Insurance Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
