Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads hosted the Niagara Ice Dogs in the back end of a home and home at the Hershey Centre Friday night. Last night, the Trout were too much to handle for Niagara as they took down the Ice Dogs 5-3. Michael McLeod, Nathan Bastian and Alexander Nylander combined for 10 points (4 goals and 6 assists) in the contest while Ryan McLeod added his fourth of the year in the win. This game marked the first time the Ice Dogs have made their way to Mississauga this season.

The game started with high intensity as each team was looking to capitalize on a scoring chance to give their side an early advantage. Quality scoring chances were plenty for both side but to no prevail as Jack Flinn and Brent Moran kept the game scoreless heading into the second. The Steelheads had two excellent chances to score but Moran spectacular saves to keep Niagara in the game. The first being on Michael McLeod as Moran reached back to clear the puck with his stick just before it crossed the goal line. The second one was on Alex Nylander; as Moran was on his back, Nylander tried to wire on over Moran but the Ice Dogs goalie showed off his flexibility and stuck his pad up in time to keep the puck out of the net. Shots in the frame were 11-10 Steelheads.

The second period began just like the first with both teams flying out of the gates. Around the 11 minute mark of the frame, the Ice Dogs would be the first to light the lamp as captain Anthony DiFruscia would take the Graham Knott pass at the top of the circle and fire it top corner by the glove of Jack Flinn for his 13th of the season to give Niagara the 1-0 lead. The teams would exchange chances throughout the rest of the period but neither side could find the back of the net as the Steelheads trailed the Ice Dogs heading into the final period. Shots in the period were 10-8 Steelheads, 21-18 Steelheads for the game.

Niagara would extend their lead to 2-0 just 25 seconds into the third as Ryan Mantha's point shot would hit the post and deflect right to Johnny Corneil who had an empty to bury his 8th of the season by Flinn. However, at the 12 minute mark of the period, the Steelheads would cut into the Ice Dogs' lead to 2-1 as Josh Burnside, in his first home game as captain, received the Alex Nylander feed in the slot and fired one blocker side by Moran for his 5th goal of the season. Stefan LeBlanc drew the other assist on Burnside's marker. The Steelheads took control of the game after Burnside's tally as they had Niagara pinned in their end for the majority of the third period. Despite their advantage in puck possession time, the Ice Dogs would extend their lead back to two as Corneil would take the Josh Ho-Sang pass at the hashmarks and made no mistake as he put another one by Flinn for his second of the game. Niagara would put the game away with two minutes left as Ho-Sang buried the empty netter to give the Ice Dogs the 4-1 victory. Shots in the period were 8-7 Niagara, 28-27 Steelheads total.

The Trout will be back in action this Sunday as they take on the Central Division leading Barrie Colts where the annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place.
