
'Wolves Drop Series Opener to Thunder

The SeaWolves could not overcome early Trenton runs on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park as they fell to the Thunder 6-3.
Trenton struck first in the top of the first inning against Erie starter James Avery. Abraham Almonte led off and reached on an error. A Ronnier Mustelier base hit moved Almonte into scoring position and he scored on a Zoilo Almote sacrifice fly. With two outs, Cody Johnson crushed a home run to center for a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Trenton went ahead 3-0 on a solo Kevin Mahoney home run.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the last of the second against Trenton starter Shaeffer Hall. Jordan Lennerton led off and connected on a solo home run, his fifth, making it a 3-1 game. Lennerton has now homered three times in the last two games. With two outs, Brent Dlugach and Michael Rockett connected on back-to-back singles. Niuman Romero singled home Dlugach to make it 3-2 in favor of the Thunder.
Trenton went back ahead by two in the top of the fourth. Almonte led off with a single and was doubled home by Zoilo Almote for a 4-2 Thunder edge.
Erie cut the lead again in the bottom of the third. Tony Plagman led off and was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a Rawley Bishop walk. Plagman came home to score on a Bryan Pounds sacrifice fly making it a one-run game at 4-3. The SeaWolves would get no closer.
In the sixth, Melky Mesa slammed a two-run home run making it a 6-3 game.
Avery (1-1) took the loss allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Hall (2-1) earned the win allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings.
The SeaWolves take on the Thunder in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park.6:35 First Pitch. Lefty Jay Voss (0-2, 5.79 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Brett Marshall (1-1, 7.00 ERA).
Tuesday is Kids Eat Free night. The first 500 kids ages 12 and under will receive a free meal consisting of a Smith's Hot Dogs, a drink and snack.
