Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH-The Utah Grizzlies carried a lead into the third period for only the second time this season and came away disappointed. After 59 minutes of outstanding play the Chicago Wolves' Brian Sipotz poked the go-ahead goal past net minder David LeNeveu. Seconds later, the Wolves drove the final nail in the victory with an empty net goal scored by Karl Stewart, his second goal of the game.
The first period saw the Grizzlies strike early and first when Keith Ballard scored his second goal of the season at the 4:27 mark on a power play. The Wolves answered 3:31 later with an unassisted goal by Karl Stewart. The Grizzlies scored once again in the first period as a penalty expired. Matthew Spiller took a pass from Peter White as he exited the penalty box. He slipped behind the Chicago defense and beat Kari Lehtonen for his 3rd goal of the season.
There was no scoring during the second period and both teams seemed tentative as they played a defensive second period.
The third period began as the second had ended with more defensive back-and-forth play. For only the second time since opening night the Grizzlies opened the third period with the lead. The Wolves struck again late in the third to tie the game up as a result of Matthew Spiller's holding penalty sustained at the 14:26 mark of the frame. Chicago's Cory Larose slipped the goal past the Grizzlies keeper on assists by Travis Roche and former Grizzly Greg Hawgood. Brian Sipotz scored the go-ahead goal with less than a minute to go at 19:10. Then, 44 seconds later, Karl Stewart scored his second marker of the game with an empty net goal.
Peter White tallied an assist on both of Utah's goals in the game which places him leading all other Grizzlies with 11 assists on the year.
Both teams were 1 for 3 on the power play and the shots were slightly in Utah's favor 39 versus the Wolves 37.
Tonight's action was the first game of a 4 game suspension for one of the Grizzlies leading scorers, Jeff Taffe.
The Grizzlies will play the Chicago Wolves again on Wednesday night, December 1, at the 'E' Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
Three Stars: 1. Kari Lehtonen (CHI), 2. Travis Roche (CHI), 3. Keith Ballard (UT)
