Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 1-0 at home to the Norfolk Admirals Wednesday. The loss came in the second-annual "Cool Fun 101" educationally-themed morning game that began at 11:05 a.m. in front of 5,061 fans, most of them school children from Bridgeport and the surrounding communities.
Norfolk took the only lead of the game 3:32 into the first period when Jason Morgan scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play off assists from Jim Vandermeer and Quintin Laing. The goal was made possible because Admirals Goaltender Michael Leighton had the presence of mind to turn around and re-set his net on its pegs as his teammates moved up ice. Had Leighton not re-set the goal, play would have been whistled dead.
The Sound Tigers had a number of chances to tie the game in the final half minute of play after they pulled Netminder Wade Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker, including a pair of face-offs in the Norfolk zone, but they could not score.
The loss snapped the Sound Tigers' five-game, home-ice win streak. It was also their first loss in five games when trailing after two periods of play at home this season, as well as their first loss in seven games when outshot at home this season.
Leighton made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season to earn first star honors. Dubielewicz stopped 24 shots in a losing effort and was named the second star. Morgan was the third star of the game.
The Admirals had a 25-21 shots on goal advantage snapping a five-game run of advantages in that category for the Sound Tigers. Norfolk was 1 for 6 on the power play while the Sound Tigers were 0 for 4.
The Sound Tigers will play the second and third games of a four-game home-stand when they host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the Lowell Lock Monsters this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
